Perfect Kids Parties - Tip #9 - Thinking Before Baking Saves Time and Trouble
By Sarah Gasu
You can't have a party without great food, preferably of the simple finger variety, hopefully healthy, but more likely not. Still, it is possible to disguise good food as fun food. But before thinking recipes, you need to think delivery.
First of all, consider what age group are you catering for? As you know, kids have a habit of grabbing, so one of my favourite styles of delivery is putting the food in a party box or bag. It works great with younger children as you can make sure everyone gets a bit of everything instead of little Bobby grabbing all the chocolate biscuits before anyone else gets a look in. It is also a great way to transport food to a park or other venue as it is already neatly packed away and can all be popped in the boot of the car without mess.
If you are going to use a table it is best with younger children to serve the food in one sitting then pack it away when everyone is done. A buffet style delivery works well with teenagers, but leaving food out on a party table can be messy with little fingers around.
Naturally when thinking food you'll be thinking drinks too. Make sure you have plenty of cold water available to rehydrate sweaty little bodies as sweet drinks just make you feel more thirsty, wanna pee a lot, and possibly even vomit...I speak from experience!
Now this tip is really important. When the parents call to RSVP, check with them about any allergies or special dietary needs their child may have. To be on the safe side I always recommend avoiding anything with nuts in at parties as so many children these days are allergic to them.
Oh, and don't forget to have a few grown up treats for you and those who were kind enough to have stayed to help, you deserve it.
