Hosting a Themed Treasure Hunt Party
By Yvonnette Sanchez
Looking for buried loot is good clean fun. People of all ages, children, and those who are kids at heart will always have a good time while searching for pirate's gold - imagined or not.
What is they key to a good party? The answer is imagination, a good one. You don't have to have deep pockets to host a fun party. All it needs is brains and ingenuity.
Start with the invitations. If you have kids, get them to help you. It's fun working with them, plus it cheap. A few cookies, a glass of milk, art supplies and lots of patience and you're done. Start by making a pattern. Do you want a skull and crossed bones design? Or maybe a simple treasure chest. Cut them out and ask the kids to color them with. You'll end up with different colors and designs that I'm sure your visitors will not only appreciate, but marvel at the effort and creativity put behind the invites.
Define your goal. How do you want the hunt to proceed? You can have them follow a treasure map for instance, or may be you want your players to search for clues by giving them puzzles and riddles. A map is easy to draw. You can do the X marks the spot routine and have them dig out the treasure chest. For a more interesting treasure hunt, you will need clues and riddles that can easily be solved by your players.
For kids, clues, tasks, puzzles and riddles have to be uncomplicated so that the kids will easily get them. Kids love a good chase so make sure you have sufficient space to hide all the treasures. You can also use visual clues and have them search under specific land marks. However, don't be afraid to tease their brains. Remember that young as they may be, children have very complex imaginations. But make sure that regardless of how easy or complicated your clues and riddles may be, it's not fun unless the treasure gets to be found.
But no matter how complicated or simple your party may be, always be prepared, and plan ahead. Just like a good movie, a party needs a good director to make sure that all the details have been taken cared of. And don't forget to buy the booty. Happy hunting!
