Perfect Kids Parties - The #8 Tip - The Power of Delegation
By Sarah Gasu
Have you ever wondered how it is that other Mum's manage to pull off such amazingly successful children's parties without even breaking a sweat?
The secret to the perfect children's party is a combination of enthusiasm, thoughtful planning and the ability to maintain control over a room of rowdy sugared up mini people. But there is one more little secret which if used carefully can guarantee great results, and it's called 'delegation'. In other words, get reliable people to take some of the responsibility off your shoulders.
The RSVP is a great way for you to get organized and delegate. When people call to accept the invitation, don't be afraid to delegate responsibility. If you are expecting a large group of children, ask a few parents' you feel comfortable with if they will be able to stay and help out. Only a few though, as too many just adds to your own pressure if they are standing around with nothing to do.
Don't be afraid to ask other parents to bring a specific plate of food. Make a list of the more simple things you need and then assign those things to others, a fruit salad, a packet of biscuits, or a plate of sandwiches. Then you can focus some time on more fiddly food things you had planned. Be specific when delegating food or you may end up with 5 plates of Tim Tams and nothing else.
The day of the party is the biggest challenge, and hopefully you have been successful in getting a couple of other parents to help out. Have responsibilities in mind for these parents so that they feel needed and are not there just for company. For example, assign one adult the responsibility of putting out the food and managing the table with bowl refills, while another could be responsible for drinks and making sure none of the littlies are getting dehydrated. One lucky mum could handle toilet duties of small children are attending.
You'd be surprised how many Mums are happy to be asked to help in some way, and when all else fails, you can always try and drag your own dear Mum in on all the action.
One last tip in the delegation area; show your gratitude by having a few grown up treats for those kind enough to help and a little gift bag and thank you note just for the mums who helped shows how much you value their friendship and support.
