Planning The Perfect Go Diego Go Birthday Party
By Kym Harris
Baby Animal Rescue Adventure
Divide your party guests into groups of 2 or 3 Search and Rescue Teams, and have each team go searching for a baby animal who has gotten himself into trouble! Gather enough of your child's stuffed animals to create 2-3 rescue missions per team. Hide these stuffies in different locations in your home (or outside if weather permits). Print out clues to help your little Diego's find the stuffies.
For example: Hide Baby Jaguar in the bathtub. Your clue could be: "Baby Jaguar has gotten into trouble again. He was playing by the river bank and fell into the water! The current took him out into the river and he is now stuck holding on to a river branch. The water is rising quickly and he needs your help now!"
Another example: Hide Baby Tiger in one of your potted plants (or in a bush outside). Your clue could be: "Baby Jaguar has gone off to play in the Jungle. He was playing tag with his lemur friend and chased him up the tree. But Baby Jaguar got too high up and got scared, now he's afraid to come down and needs your help!"
Go Diego Go Obstacle Course
Put together an obstacle course for your party guests and have them run through it. You can create two identical courses and have two teams run it in a race against each other or just have them run the same course and time each team.
Use items that you find around the house such as:
Hula Hoops - they can hula with them, they can roll them along the floor/grass to get from one station to the next.
Skipping Ropes - they can use them to skip with, they can be set up so the guests have to jump over them (pretend the skipping rope is a river, and the guest is not allowed to touch the rope as they jump over it).
Extension Ladders (straight, not a-frame) - lay these on the ground and have the kids either climb along them hands and feet along the rungs, or they can gently step in between the rungs.
Frisbees - have the kids toss the Frisbees into a circle (use your hula hoop, or make a circle with the skipping rope or garden hose.
Sports Balls - have the kids play kick the ball for distance or accuracy by having them aim at a predetermined target.
Get creative and use the many objects you have in your own home! Ask your birthday boy or girl for their input on how they would like the obstacle course to be designed. It is a great way to get them involved in the planning and you may even be surprised by some of the creative ideas that they come up with! Take advantage of this one on one time to create a special birthday planning memory with you and your child.
Call Of The Wild
Before the party begins, write the names of various animals on cue cards. You will need one cue card for each guest and two extras for good measure. One by one have each guest come up and draw one of the cards out of a bag.
Each child takes a turn trying to imitate the jungle animal they have chosen ... what sounds does that animal make? How do they walk?
After the children have each taken a turn, have them all stand up and form a jungle parade line. March them in to the eating area as they all imitate their favourite animal ... get ready, it may be a little noisy!
Go Diego Go Party Food Ideas
When you are planning a menu for a birthday party, it is always good to keep your target audience in mind. Kids usually have picky appetites at parties and, with energy levels running high, it is unlikely that they will sit still for a lengthy meal. Look for finger foods that are easy to prepare and simple to serve.
Here are some of our favourites:
Jungle Fruit Kabobs
Animal Crackers (of course!)
Safari So Good Fruit Punch
Slippery Snakes Pasta
Mini Pizza Bites
Chicken Fingers
