Luau Party Planning
By Shannon L Weidemann
Winter is here and with it the winter blahs. Summer seems to be a faint memory as you shovel the sidewalk for the third time this year. One great way to warm up and get together with your family and friends is to host a Luau party.
The first thing that your guests will see is the party invitation and that is a great way to set the mood. Make your own luau invitations by taking your inspiration from Hawaii. Surf boards, volcanoes, tiki idols, and hula dancers would all make a great invitation. Find a graphic online to make your own, visit your local craft store for supplies, or order them from a stationary store.
Decorations for your home can come from your local grocery store. Load your cart up with tropical fruit such as pineapples, mangos, papayas, and coconuts. Use them as table centerpieces and cut up on your buffet. They will both decorate and feed your guests. Your florist should be able to help with tropical flowers.
Tiki torches can line the walkway to your home. Each guest should be welcomed to the Island with a lei placed around their neck. Set the mood with Hawaiian music playing in the background. A limbo pole is an absolute must at a Luau party. Search your area for a local hula dancer that can perform and teach your guests how to hula.
Food can be as simple as some kebobs thrown on the barbecue or as complicated as a pig roast. A local caterer should be able to help you out with the latter. Try your hand at making poi, a traditional Hawaiian food.
A Luau party may not make winter any shorter, but for one fun night it will warm you and your guests. Host one in grand style and your guests will not want to say Aloha at the end of the evening.
