Scooby Doo Birthday Planning and Ideas
By Brent Shellhorse
So, we just had my oldest son's 3rd birthday party. Everyone had a great time. Because my son has an August birthday, we went to a lot of other children's parties earlier in the year. If you were clueless, like us, kid's parties today are theme oriented. I wanted to share some party ideas and tips for your next party.
The key is to have the theme run from start to finish. This means that beginning with the party invitations to the thank you notes, all need to be pre-planned and coordinated around a theme. The secret is to get all of this done and not to stress too much trying to make everything perfect. (Trust me, not stressing is easier said than done).
Choosing a theme is pretty simple, what is it your child likes? Once you know that, build the party around that idea, character, or whatever it is. Cartoon characters make a great party theme. If your child loves Scooby Doo, like mine, planning and hosting a Scooby Doo party can be fun and relatively easy.
Your party should be 2 - 2 1/2 hours, anything longer is at your own peril. You also need to have table and seating for every child and parents. You are going to need plan for the following:
1. Invitations. Get invitations that tell the guests the theme of your party. It builds excitement and also stakes your territory. The last thing you want is to have another child have the same themed party.
2. Decorations. Scooby Doo decorations are plentiful and fairly inexpensive. You can get banners, stickers, table clothes, balloons, and a whole lot more to decorate. I would recommend getting decorations with the characters on them. If your on a budget, you can save money by getting some character decorations and color coordinating the other decorations. Balloons and table clothes are a good example of where you can save money by color coordinating. Crepe paper, table clothes, or balloons in the same colors as on the Mystery Machine could save you several dollars.
3. Dress Up. You can also provide masks, headbands, and other dress up accessories for the kids. This just adds to the theme.
4. Cake. Because Scooby, the Mystery Machine, and the other characters are nearly iconic, you can get your local grocery store or bakery to decorate up a sheet cake to match your theme.
5. Plates and Silverware. Depending on your budget, you can choose between items with character images or just color coordinate. You should compare prices, many times the themed items are cheaper than you might expect.
6. Entertainment. Kids need something to do at the party, however, you must strike a balance between entertainment and being too structured. You do not need to have some organized activity for every minute of the party.
Most tried and true birthday games can be adapted to fit this theme. The most obvious is a treasure hunt. Essentially, you are creating a mystery that the children must solve. Other easily adapted favorites pin the tail on the Great Dane or a pinata.
7. Party favors. Today, the birthday boy or girl also usually send the other kids home with some sort of party favors. This could be the dress up items (number 3 above) or it could be items like crayons and a Scooby coloring book.
8. Thank you notes. Finally, you should send thank you notes. These can be purchased inexpensively and provide the finishing touch to a successful event.
Many of these items you can by individually or get a package that has everything you need. If you can afford the complete party packs, these are a real time saver.
If you will start planning and getting your decorations between 45 and 60 days out, you will be fine. Good luck and Happy Birthday.
