Party Planning: Dress Up Your Room!
By Ellen Zucker
Isn't it fun to dress up for a party? You get to wear your festive clothes and jewelry. Just the act of getting dressed is enough to get into a party mood.
The site of your event deserves no less.
You can take any room, no matter how pedestrian in its work-a-day role, and transform it into a festive backdrop for the fun.
One of the easiest ways to do that is through the use of linens. Linens, the events industry term for table clothes and related fabrics, come in every type of color and texture. In fact, part of the fun is to mix, match and coordinate your picks.
Better yet, you don't buy the materials - you rent them. Party linen rental companies abound.
Linens and well-thought-out table arrangements provide a gracious welcome to your guests.
By arranging your tables so that they angle into the room, guests are gently guided into the festivities. Mixing shapes, sizes, and height brings spontaneity to the event and communicates that it is entirely permissible to let down your hair.
Now the magic begins.
Many tables in a banquet halls and hotels are nothing more than bare planks of particleboard mounted onto ugly metal legs. No wonder we want them covered.
But why settle for the typical white table cloth when color choices abound. For color, many designers think in threes: a base color and two complements.
This year, brown tones are all the rage - anything from deepest darkest chocolate to rust, to pale tan. And these tones are paired with the glint of gold. The folks that sit around and predict color trends - yes, there are people who get paid to do that - are talking about indigos, blues, and greens for next year.
Keeping your room's décor in mind will help you choose appropriate color themes.
You don't have to stick with solids. Open yourself to stripes and prints.
And there is texture! Smooth or nubby, matte or shiny. But don't limit yourself to just one.
Think layers. Start with a base and add a coordinated runner. Or begin with an opaque fabric and layer it with something filmy; or a contrasting metallic that glitters and glistens.
Be generous with your fabrics. A 90 inch round table cloth is just the ticket to clothe a high top table. Fabric hangs over, but with a long sash you can tie a bow to gather the excess. From a distance, the table looks like a martini glass. Add your party favors on top as gracious way to say "good-bye, thank you for coming and I hope you had a wonderful time."
